I tried your proposed workarounds in order to reproduce your case, with a liveCD that was already burned,  Lubuntu Lucid Beta 2:
Booting with "nomodeset" -> usable screen (This wasn't the case during beta1, so \o/ )
Booting with "nouveau.modeset=0" -> usable screen (same as above)
Booting with "nouveau.noaccel=1" -> didn't help, fuzzy screen, unusable.

Not completely the same, but thanks for pointing out the fixed
nomodeset.
