[Bug 564084] [NEW] System can not mount root / NVIDIA driver crashes

Public bug reported:

Since the latest update, my system does not boot anymore. The symptoms
depend on the kernel that I boot:

linux image -21:
No splash is ever displayed, Only a blank text-mode screen. Sometimes, the system reboots itself after a few seconds. In recovery mode, the kernel panics. The relevant line reads: "VFS: cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)"

linux image -19:
The closed-source nvidia driver fails to load. Sometimes, the system also freezes while displaying the "low-graphics" warning. An Xorg logfile is attached. This kernel worked without problems before I installed the latest update. The kernel logfile does not contain any additional information.

older versions, upto -16:
same as -19, all used to work before the last update.
