.. for now I`m on karmic with nox at nox-toshiba:~$ uname -a
Linux nox-toshiba 2.6.34-996-generic #201004211209 SMP Wed Apr 21
12:14:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
.. had to download all radeon firmwares cuz "sudo update-initramfs -u -k
2.6.34-996-generic" complained about all firmwares for radeon under
copyright...

Still there are manny issues...
I`ll try your suggestion and report like you did instructed

for now...
