   I can't actually validate what hardware the people have; but there have been probably a dozen or so which say they've had hd5xxx of various types.

If this is an issue of missing firmware it really should fail in a
better way! A black screen is pretty grim; falling back to not KMS would
work. (I seem to remember there was a bug on mainline kernel to fall
back).
