Public bug reported:

This started happening right after yesterday's updates, and so I suspect
it may be related.

When I first rebooted my computer after the updates, I hit "enter" on
the GNOME login screen to select my account, then when I hit the second
"2" in my password, the screen went blank, then it showed me the BIOS
POST screen, and Ubuntu started booting again. When I tried this again,
the same problem occurred (around the time I entered the second "2", I
am not sure if I had just typed that exact character though). I then
held shift during the initial boot process, and selected the 2.6.32-19
kernel I still had installed, and everything worked without a problem. I
rebooted my computer again, to see if the bug would occur again, but
this time it did not, so I went into update manager and clicked the
"Check for updates" button. Upon hitting the second "2" in my password,
the entire system crashed again and I rebooted and am now reporting this
bug.

Note: The second two is the 9th character in my password (and I use a
completely different password for Launchpad).
