I installed GKrellM and noticed a strong correlation between the
temperature and performance of the system. As the temperature went up,
the value of hdparm -T went down.

The funny thing is I have a Typematrix keyboard, which I placed on top
of my laptop. There is air flow going through the keys of the keyboard,
so it seems that the M4400 uses the keyboard as part of the cooling
system.

I assume this is because the hardware system is protecting itself
against overheating by throttling performance, which makes sense. For me
I think the issue may be solved. Thanks for the help. Sorry about the
noise caused. I hope this helps somebody.
