Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.
The behavior change since beta1 is a change in linux to disable KMS by
default on the i8xx series intel video chips, as a workaround for
various X crashes (bug #542208, bug #563277). If X was stable for you
with the previous kernel, you can add 'i915.modeset=1' to your boot
options to restore the previous behavior.
Aside from this, any issues with the display under the current kernel
are probably bugs in your video hardware's support for displaying a
640x480 VGA console; there's probably not much we can do to help for
this, short of being able to turn KMS back on by default.
Reassigning to the kernel.
