[Bug 570656] [NEW] microphone no longer works with Ubuntu 9.10. Worked fine with version 9.04

Public bug reported:

 Sound record and sound play worked fine with previous version. 
After an automatic update to Ubuntu 9.10,, no sound input or output is detected any longer (both microphone and speakers) in any application (amixer, Firefox, etc.). Hardware is detected but does not show in I/O list of sound applications.
