Chris - I always assumed there was a hardware problem.  The point of
this bug report was to suggest that Ubuntu deal sensibly with the
hardware problem by posting a single error message somewhere, rather
than getting stuck in an infinite loop of error-message posting.

But yes, anyone seriously troubled by this error would probably be
advised to check their hardware.
