I'm dubious that the testing you want me to do is either useful or
feasible:
(a) The current ISO image is only 2 days later than when I filed this bug report, and the machine was absolutely up-to-date on available package via update-manager at that time. Does the current CD image really contain a newer kernel? How can I tell before I waste my time? Should I instead retest with whatever the latest kernel is I get from update-manager instead? After all, isn't -that- the very latest Ubuntu kernel easily available? Doing that test would be effortless---all I have to do is to undo the GRUB_DEFAULT that's currently forcing use of 2.6.32-20, the last kernel that is known to boot on this machine, since I am still running update-manager every day.
(b) The actual failure is a TOTAL FREEZE, after the machine has been pingable for approximately 5 seconds. No logging is left behind. How can I furnish any useful logs in this case? All I can do is to give you logs from my current working kernel, and/or to tell you that some later kernel -does- boot (though I'll have to find a later, working kernel for that to be true).
(c) Since the machine is in a space that's difficult to get to, and a drive away, it's unlikely I'll have time to do any testing for a few days, and I won't be able to do much iterative testing. I'll do what I can, but I'd like to avoid random stabbing in the dark.
Assuming that the answer to (a) is "it's not newer" and that no obvious
solution is forthcoming for (b), this means about all I can do is to try
an upstream kernel the next time (c) is true and let you know if it
boots or not. If it fails to boot, there will be no logs. If it does
boot, we won't know why the bug is fixed or whether it will stay fixed;
if it fails to boot, it doesn't seem like I'd be able to furnish any
useful information except "still broken".
Thanks...
