Can confirm this doesn't work the rc version of ubuntu with kernel 2.6.32-21-generic - it however does work if these two packages are installed.
usb-modeswitch-data_20100127-1_all.deb
usb-modeswitch_1.1.0-2_i386.deb

I will uninstall those and do the apport-collect code and then try the
mainline kernel as suggested and let you know whether that makes any
difference.
