Strange behaviour:
I've downloaded "linux-headers-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004261005_i386.deb" and "	linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004261005_i386.deb" and installed them with "dpkg -i linux-*.deb". This failed for "linux-headers". So I only installed "linux-image" and rebooted my system.
   I went to kitchen for a cup of tea and after I was back, the system was up and ready to login. I opened a terminal and checked for "uname -a". The output was:

 "Linux trash 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux".

I wondered how this could be and did some checks. In "/boot" all relevant "2.6.34-999" files existed, so I did a "update-grub" and another reboot. Now the system booted into "2.6.34-999". Another reboot with selection "2.6.32-21" booted again without any problems.
I uninstalled "2.6.34-999" and "update-grub" with another reboot, again without problem.

So it seems the problem doesn't exist any more.

Maybe this has something to do with my daily dist-upgrades. I noticed
that there was an initramfs update:
