You have been subscribed to a public bug:
I have purchased a 4G Systems XS Stick W14 (http://4g-
systems.com/www/produkte.php?page=produkte&kat=3&id=5&parent=3&lang=en)
which is a USB UMTS device which also has built in MicroSD memory slot
and built in memory.
When the stick is inserted into a machine running Ubuntu 10.04 RC - it
is mounted as a memory device but the system does not recognise the UMTS
modem device. therefore I can not use it for surfing on the internet.
There is a German language website which has a work around solution. but I have been unsuccessful getting it to work.

And a reference in the Kernel.org :
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/63325/
This stuff is too advanced for "normal" users - there must be an easier
way . .
** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Confirmed
