You can close this now. This is what happened. Yesterday morning I
did my updates, which included a kernel update. I rebooted. That
afternoon, I was on a skype call with a co-workers in which i was using
video chat. After that, I suspended my laptop to go back to my desk. i
opened my laptop and it failed to resume from suspend. I hard powered
the laptop and all booted up fine, suspended then went home. Got in
this morning, resume from suspend was fine, however webcam was not
working.
I tried to reset the PVRAM via this method (this was reported to work
for others):
1. shutdown
2. hold option/alt, cmd, r, p, then hold power (do not let go of any of the keys). wait for second gong to release
What worked for me was booting back into OS X, opening photo booth (make
sure camera worked), then rebooting back into Ubuntu.
OS X appears to be doing some flush that uvcvideo or the kernel don't
do. Whatever it was, webcam works now.
