this worked for me too, with the Mini1100, but there were a couple of wrinkles needed:
[1] grub2 doesn't let you choose at boot unless you configure it right; i don't fully grasp al its complications, but you can get the right kernel used by latering one of the settings in Startupmanager - which can be installed from Universe. It's rather minimal for grub 2 but will allow you to get 2.6.31-14 used [i'm only using grub2 on my netbook because Ubuntu NBR used it by default - on my main machine i backgraded to 9.04 because it's such a pain.]
[2] avoid installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic - it mucked up the kernels; linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic works for me [in fact after removing 2.6.31-19 the first wasn't offered in synaptic anyawy]
