FYI, my (solved) problem is/was NCQ not SMART as you can see in this
comment in another bug:

If you see "failed command READ FPDMA QUEUED" kind of logs in dmesg then
that might be for you...

Basically you need to pass " libata.force=noncq " to the linux kernel
boot param which I am doing but not sure what to do if people have
multiple drives some properly supporting NCQ...
