Update...
Went to System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Output Tab
Selected 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' and got my sound back!
Don't know why it mysteriously stopped working the first time with
'RS780 Azalia' selected, but this has worked for me. I wouldn't consider
this a 'fix' but perhaps a workaround....
