The following article helped me to repair grub so that I could get the computer running:

I had to modify the instructions given there because I had /usr on a
separate partition.
The next important step was to modify fstab to mount the hard drives by
UUID, as disk order gets changed so the older method (by /dev/sdX) is
not reliable.
I think that part of the problem my be related to the fact that I am now
using ext4 instead of ext3.
