Thanks Jeremy,
I tested with 2.6.35-020635rc1-generic (lucid build) and the same problem exists. No combination of volume, or input selection yields sound coming into the microphone. 
One thing to note is that the headphone jack on this laptop is a combined headphone/microphone jack. This should not affect the built in microphone, but I thought I'd mention it.
