I could fix this using kernel 2.6.34-020634rc6 from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc6-lucid/ (see
bug #541502, comment 32). The test kernel mentioned here in comment 78
did not fix this problem.

System: Thinkpad T60, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
