I'm also experiencing this issue: about once a month the entire X
session will lock; even the cursor stops moving. I previously assumed
that this was the hardware locking up, but I've just discovered I can
SSH into the box while it's locked up. Running 'reboot' does very
little, and I get a black square with some randomly-placed coloured
pixels up the top-left of my desktop.
Until recently I was running Jaunty, and I was experiencing the issue
there as well. I dist-upgraded to Lucid via Karmic a few weeks ago. I
haven't been able to link the crashes to any specific activity. I'm
reasonably sure my memory is ok; I plan to run memtest86 soon to
confirm.
I'll run apport-collect as requested as soon as I can work out how to
login to launchpad (#556927, awesome...).
