The situation should be greatly improved in kernel 2.6.35. See

This kernel is being used in the upcoming Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick
Meerkat". If you want to try this on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx", a PPA of
kernel 2.6.35-rc6 can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/

The final version of kernel 2.6.35 should be available soon.
