Hello!
Yesterday (2010-May-30) I came across with a peculiar problem, I
upgraded from 9.10 ->10.04LTS via update manager and rebooted and I see
the Ubuntu logo with the red dots loading (looks awful and I assume that
is loading) for a few seconds, then the screen goes black (no login
screen) I just get the login prompt.
So I decided to do a fresh install, on another computer I burned the
ISOs, but when I tried the livecd the desktop never loads, it just goes
into a black screen, then the command line appears, I have tried the
live CD i386 & amd64 and same result.
Have tried it on several desktop and laptops, so I figure the ISOs are
corrupted, so tried burning new ones on a different machine and I get
the same result.
Some quick details of the machines I have tried the 10.04LTS ISOs:
Toshiba laptop - nVidia video card 256MB, P4HT 2GB Ram
Toshiba laptop - Ati video card 512 MB, C2D 4GB Ram
Asus desktop - Asus video card 512 MB, C2D 4GB Ram
Dell laptop - intel video card 1GB, C2Q 8GB Ram
HP desktop - intel video card1GB, C2Q 4GB Ram
So I downloaded and burned the ISOS for 9.10 on the machine that I
burned the 10.04LTS ISOS, and the freshly 9.10 burned ISOs work just
fine (so I can assume that my DVDRW unit is working properly) all
machines are up and running fine with 9.10.
Also tried on some friends laps/desktops and nope, I get the Ubuntu
screen with the red dots for a moment, then it just goes back to a black
screen with the promp.
No error messages appear either with the installed or running the livecd, and no desktop or login screen ever appears.
The computer DOES NOT freeze, I'm able to use command line, tried to start x server but, nothing happens, no errors are prompt.
I tried sudo apt-get dist-update
I tried sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
have tried several intents to get graphics running but no luck, no
errors prompt.
Anyone have an idea of what the problem might be?
I have read that plymouth may be the problem, so I can assume that it is not the videocard drivers because this is happening in computers with nvidia, ati & intel graphic cards.
In the meantime 9.10 works just fine.
Thank you, hope the issue/bug is solved soon.
1- 9.10 -->10.04LTS update via update Manager
10.04LTS installed via livecd i386/amd64 (selected Install Ubuntu)
10.04LTS trying livecd i386/amd64 (trying Ubuntu without changing computer)
2- ?
3- to have a login screen (installed) - desktop (livecd)
4- I just get command line and computer DOES NOT freeze
Thank you!
