I experienced this problem as well, and the fix described here helped.

Just wondering why the linux-backports-modules-XXX packages aren't installed by default. 
I'm assuming that the Ubuntu Kernel team has put a lot of work into porting them to the Ubuntu release kernels.
It seems a shame for users to encounter problems that already have a fix.
