Thanks to Scott Testerman for telling me how to close this myself.

Update:
- laptop worked better after cleaning, but eventually I had several hangs with various symptoms, including the above file corruption. For some reason, it hits OpenOffice config files most often (or, perhaps, those are merely the ones I notice).

- I've been running Lucid since alpha 4 without a hitch. Literally no
problems (and lots of goodness). From this I infer that Karmic is
associated with (causes?) the overheating and that it is fixed in Lucid.
(t could be that the problem only shows up with my laptop model or
components.
