Running Xubuntu 9.10, here's what I have to do to make the modem work:
Initial situation: Computer and monitor turned off (grid power removed).
1. Connect the power grid to computer and monitor
2. Boot the computer
3. When logged in and boot finished, restart the computer (= re-boot)
4. If necessary, disconnect the modem via the netapplet and connect it again. This appears to enable some Internet services and URLs that previously were unreachable. If I try to do this after step 2, the menu doesn't even mention the broadband connection, and displays only the "Auto Ethernet" connection, even though it has been removed from the list.
Steps 1 through 3 are compulsory for each startup of the system. Only
occasionly can step 3 and 4 be omitted.
This has been the case for a long time. The fact that I have to do the
same things in Mint 8 implies to me that there might be a kernel
problem. Hints, anyone?
The reason I disconnect the power grid is that I need to preserve energy
in order to survive on my pension.
Regards,
Bengt
