I have some even more bizarre behavior to report with regards to this
bug. The above symptoms only seem to occur when the usb key was plugged
into a Windows XP machine right before trying to mount it in Ubuntu. I
have been able to reproduce this multiple times.
Case 1: attach to a XP box --> safely remove --> attach to an Ubuntu box
--> experience problems described above.
Case 2: attach to a XP box --> safely remove --> attach to a Vista box
--> safely remove --> attach to an Ubuntu box --> key mounts with no
problems.
Case 3: attach to an Ubuntu box --> safely remove --> attach to a
Windows XP box --> safely remove --> re-attach to Ubuntu box -->
experience problems described above.
You can go through all the permutations you'd like, but it seems to be
the XP -> Ubuntu combination that causes the problems. Is it possible
that XP leaves the key is some sort of bad state that then clashes with
Ubuntu? Like I said, bizarre .....
I think this makes things even more unclear. It may not even be an
Ubuntu bug. In my case, though, it's repeatable, so I thought it
noteworthy.
