Maybe it is my ignorance, but I cannot understand why did you add karmic. Karmic's kernel (2.6.31) has no thermal problems. Karmic related problems are discussed in other places, see e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/392812
Thermal problems turn up only in Lucid. Even if the two problems (brightness and thermal) are related, this is a showstopper of Lucid, not of Karmic.
