I found it also happened in later releases.     In fact it eventually seemed
to happen almost every time I booted up, in any kernel version.

But, I discovered a workaround: I could always make it go away by switching
to text mode console then back to X.

I haven't been using that machine but when I get back to it I will try to
work on debugging the issue more.
