You can verify the functioning of the hardware via the bootable diagnostic CD available for download on the Lenovo support site.
I have the same problem with no sound on my T510 - but in my case it was due to meltdown of my left speaker.
To verify if this is true for you too, follow the service manual instructions for removing the keyboard and top casing to expose your speakers. In my case, I noticed visible melting of the underside of the plastic case that sits above the speaker, and a discolored and "crispy" speaker head. I also noticed that the wires for the speaker are suspiciously taped to the copper heat sink. I'm not sure how much heat could possibly transfer through the insulation and through the wiring to the speaker - but it seems like an odd assembly choice anyway.
While I personally did not witness the meltdown happen (I do remember my speakers working initially, but I usually use headphones), those folks that did witness the meltdown claim the overheating happened while the machine was off. This raises my suspicions that the always-on USB port might be to blame - it may be worth disabling this feature in the BIOS, just to be safe.
