Hi,
similar situation here (also a Macbook pro 5.4)

I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and added

options snd_hda_intel model=mbp5

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

now i get

luca at SmookeLabLaptop:~$ lshw -C sound
WARNING: you should run this program as super-user.
  *-multimedia
       description: Audio device

       configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 maxlatency=5 mingnt=2
       resources: irq:21 memory:d3580000-d3583fff

but if I try to open the alsa-mixer

luca at SmookeLabLaptop:~$ alsamixer -c0
No mixer elems found

I'm quite new to Ubuntu (but i used fedora for quite a while) I almost
know nothing about alsa but I'm glad to help if i can

Luca
