I second Graffecke.de comment regarding the microphone: when using
linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-20-generic from ppa:ubuntu-audio-
dev/ppa, the internal mic (and possibly external also) does not work.

Many thanks to all and especially to Luke who seems to have spent a lot
of time working on this issue.

By the way, a very inelegant and temporary fix for all these problems is
to buy a USB sound card on ebay for like $3 and plug the headphones on
that. Pulseaudio volume control will definitely let you switch away from
the speakers with that setup..
