I have been using this:
$ cat /etc/pm/config.d/tormod-shutdown 
HIBERNATE_MODE="shutdown"

Although your script probably will work fine, maybe it is better to make
use of this variable, and additionally, make sure a setting in a
config.d file is not overruled by your system quirk?
