I also can not connet to a FDTI device ( 232BM - Chip ) : 
Error: Serial Port: Timeout waiting for data
/dev/ttyUSB0 is connected / disconnected every time i plug or unplug this device

Kernel: 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu
The ftdifix from #8 does not help and does not change anything

lsmod | grep ftdi gives me
ftdi_sio               xxxxxx  0 
usbserial            xxxxxx  1 ftdi_sio

On an other PC with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS the FTDI Device works perfect.
lsmod | grep ftdi gives me
ftdi_sio               xxxxxx  0 
usbserial            xxxxxx  1 ftdi_sio
usbcore             xxxxxx  7 ftdi_sio,usbserial,.......

Do i need this missing "usbcore" modul in Karmic to get my FTDI device
working or is usbcore not longer required?
