I have a Dell e520 with Ubuntu 9.10. I had the sound fading issue
through headphones, but I did the following that was mentioned in the
original post and it seems to have fixed it:

Workaround :
alt-f2
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
add "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" to end of file (without quotes), save
reboot
