Yes, the problem is still present in Lucid Lynx Alpha 3 (tested running
from Desktop CD). But it has changed a bit, volume control is now
working partially. The lowest quarter (estimated) of the slider
available in the drop-down from the top edge of the screen works as
expected. The other three quarters do not raise the volume further.
Clicking "Sound Preferences ..." in the same menu and using the slider
in the opened window allows to raise the audible volume further, but
only for positions above 100%. It looks like the volume already reaches
100% when the slider is only at about 25% and stays at 100% for
positions between 25% and 100%. Running alsamixer in the background
shows, that the lower quarter changes the volume on the pcm channel,
while the rest raises the volume on the non functional master channel.
Muting works fine now, but the crackling noise is still present and now
comes in the two lowest volume levels when changing the volume from the
gui. Changing volume (especially reducing) on the pcm channel in
alsamixer has become really slow. Sometimes it even becomes impossible
but changing volume via gui makes it possible again. The slowness stays.
Trying to use apport-collect results in a crash, this seems to be the
issue reported on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/516381 - Should I
try it in Karmic?
I guess I will have to install Lucid on hard disk to test the upstream
kernel? I will try to install it tomorrow to see if the upstream kernel
changes anything.
