I have the same problem.
Take my comment as a very speculative hypothesis.

In a notebook with intel core2duo 2GHz+2GB ram+ Intel 945GM chipset, with ubuntu 8.10 i386 (32bit)

The dvd/cd/writer is (lshw):
           *-cdrom
                description: DVD-RAM writer
                product: DVD-RAM UJ-842S
                vendor: MATSHITA
                physical id: 1
                bus info: scsi at 1:0.0.0
                logical name: /dev/cdrom
                logical name: /dev/cdrw
                logical name: /dev/dvd
                logical name: /dev/dvdrw
                logical name: /dev/scd0
                logical name: /dev/sr0
                version: 1.01
                capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
                configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

Two computers in my university have a different processor Intel Pentium
D 3.4GHz and Intel chipset, one has ubuntu 8.10 i386 the other ubuntu
9.10 i386, have the same problem.

I can burn DVD images in an external usb drive attached to the core2duo
computer, but some times fail.

I suspect that the problem may reside in a program used in a low layer
not necessarily the kernel, if a firmware is used in the process it may
be the problem.

Does linux send a firmware to the burner?
May the model be not well identified and failing because the firmware is not adequate?
What test can I do to get the information needed to check this problem?

I can do the test in the core2duo and one of the Pentium D.
