Two more data points:

1) Works fine with 4 GB RAM if I run 9.10 x86_64 from a live thumbdrive:

$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 9.10
Release:	9.10

2) Works fine with 3 GB of RAM with my 8.04.4 LTS x86_64 installation.
