I've been working around this bug by disabling and then re-enabling the
external monitor every time I resume from suspend.

Also, in duplicate #450227, Pedro Côrte-Real points out an easier
workaround:

> Switching to a console (ctrl-alt-f1) and back (alt-f7) fixes this.
