[Bug 453307] [NEW] Screen will flash from dim to bright very quickly for a few minutes and then be fine for a few more. When the problem is happening the on screen notifier of the screen brightness freezes.

this is on the beta version of xubuntu 8.10. This problem happens
whether the laptop is plugged in or running on battery power. I can
solve the problem temporarly by switching from ctrl-alt-f1 to the
display session quickly.
