[Bug 355299] Re: Long delay during boot when loading LP kernel module

In Jaunty on kernel 2.6.28-18-generic (and many prior) I was seeing this
issue sporadically. Sometimes it would do it for a month or two, then
boot normally for a month or two - the changes generally corresponded to
kernel updates or a re-install of fglrx, or possibly other packages
using dkms. I've never seen the issue on Karmic (currently running
2.6.31-20).

Based on one of the earlier posts I disabled the second (unused) ethernet controller in the bios and the issue was immediately
resolved. Both messages show the same "lp" complaint, making me think it could be a red herring, or at least multiple types of events triggering the same issue for different people.

Before on Jaunty:
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [   10.901763] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [ 10.901806] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [   10.934813] hda_codec: Unknown model for AD1988, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [   11.310921] HDA Intel 0000:06:00.1: PCI INT B -> GSI 37 (level, low) -> IRQ 37
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [ 11.310947] HDA Intel 0000:06:00.1: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 25 01:27:20 signum kernel: [ 100.124915] lp: driver loaded but no devices found

After on Jaunty:
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [   10.929459] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [ 10.929513] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [   10.962813] hda_codec: Unknown model for AD1988, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [   11.338515] HDA Intel 0000:06:00.1: PCI INT B -> GSI 37 (level, low) -> IRQ 37
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [ 11.338538] HDA Intel 0000:06:00.1: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 25 01:38:03 signum kernel: [ 11.568457] lp: driver loaded but no devices found

The ethernet controller (with the other disabled) registers as the following if it makes any difference:
lspci |grep -i realtek
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02)

On Karmic, it ends up looking something like this:
Mar 25 01:19:57 signum kernel: [ 7.986652] sd 7:0:0:3: [sdf] Attached SCSI removable disk
Mar 25 01:19:57 signum kernel: [   13.587421] udev: starting version 147
Mar 25 01:19:57 signum kernel: [ 13.605391] lp: driver loaded but no devices found
Mar 25 01:19:57 signum kernel: [ 13.609333] fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
Mar 25 01:19:57 signum kernel: [ 13.609337] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
