This also occurs on the latest -17 kernel.

But not on proprieatary nvidia drivers, should the bug be instead
towards nouveau?

  When rebooting into Lucid after running 9.10 my startup process is a follows:
  1. Screen stays with a blinking marker for a long while
  2. Fsck info is printed
  3. Plymouth TEXT splash flashes VERY briefly
  
  --> 4. Screen shows a distorted image containing elements from desktop
  of prior 9.10 session
  
  5. Desktop starts normally
