[Bug 549644] [NEW] USB mass storage hasn't worked since lucid beta upgrade from karmic

Public bug reported:
In karmic I was able to use my Thinkpad X200s's USB ports and SD card
slot to bring up both USB mass storage devices and SD/microsd volumes in
nautilus.
Since the Lucid upgrade, however, and through several kernel updates,
this has ceased to work. When I insert my microsd chip in its SD
carrier (known to work on a Dell running karmic as well as this very
machine prior to upgrade) I now only see the following in syslog:
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20583.691333] usb 2-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20583.842779] usb 2-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20583.843193] scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20583.843528] usb-storage: device found at 6
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20583.843533] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Mar 27 15:07:15 vezza kernel: [20584.136786] usb 2-6: USB disconnect, address 6
Plugging my music player -- a USB mass storage device (likewise working
on the Dell running karmic and this machine prior to upgrade) -- into
any of my thinkpad's USB ports generates nothing in syslog at all, even
though the device itself detects USB line current and wakes up to
recharge.
Occasionally the ejection of the SD card will generate syslog chatter
like the above.
Rebooting is no help at all.
I just *ejected* the SD device, and it generated similar syslog chatter:
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22833.730181] usb 2-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22833.882870] usb 2-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22833.883321] scsi7 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22833.883560] usb-storage: device found at 7
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22833.883565] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Mar 27 15:44:45 vezza kernel: [22834.160597] usb 2-6: USB disconnect, address 7
What could possibly be causing this?
