[Bug 549752] [NEW] lid switch never changes state; always open

Public bug reported:

The ACPI lid switch on my Dell Inspiron 1470 laptop never changes state
when the lid opens and closes.

Here is how I have tested:
1. I ssh into my laptop
2. I run  "watch cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state"
    It returns "state:      open".
3. I close the lid and watch the output of watch in the ssh session.
    It continues to return "state:      open".

I have updated the BIOS. I have tested with the current mainline kernel.

The expected behavior is that when the lid is closed, the state of LID0
would change and the laptop would go to sleep.
