Seems like I spoke too soon.

a) The change only delayed the problem (got another crash about a minute ago) and
b) Network manager somehow "managed" to lose the passphrase to the wireless network to which it was successfully connected for several minutes.

All these problems started with the update to "2.6.31-20-generic". Up
until then everything just worked (except for the wireless driver being
not part of a repository).
