I have the same problem on my Lenove ideapad u350 32-bit.

I get the folowing from dmesg when pressing Fn+Up/Down:

[ 3024.700954] ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness
[ 3025.561165] ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness

kernel:  2.6.32-21-generic

Setting the brightness with setpci as Marting describes works.

Hope someone can work out a patch.
