I downloaded and installed the linux headers and image files
linux-headers-2.6.31-02063112_2.6.31-02063112_all.deb
linux-headers-2.6.31-02063112-generic_2.6.31-02063112_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.31-02063112-generic_2.6.31-02063112_i386.deb
using the directions outlined at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds. I used the mapping
information to determine which mainline kernel to download
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html)
2.6.31-21.59 -->>> 2.6.31.12
After rebooting the system, I validated that I was using the 2.6.31.12
kernel. Once the kernel's version number was validated, I connected my
SONY camcorder. After the camera was connected, I executed dvgrad and
was again shown that the camera could not be found. The problem *still*
exists when using 2.6.31.12. In order to use dvgrab, I am *forced* to
use the sudo command. Not an easy or viable option for someone new to
Linux. The camera should be mounted such that I do not need to use the
sudo command.
