Public bug reported:

PROBLEM
Hot keys for adjusting screen brightness do not work in Karmic or Lucid for Gateway NV59 laptop with Arrandale Graphics.
Under Karmic, workaround was to adjust screen brightness while still in BIOS post.
Karmic would boot with the selected screen brightness

Under Lucid, screen brightness goes to 100% when booting, ignoring brightness set during boot.
Hot keys for adjusting brightness do not work.

RESULTS
Tried the following:

* Setting memory directly under /proc
Results: memory for VGA brightness would change but display wouldn't actually change

CHANGING BOOT PARAMETERS:

# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nolapic acpi_backlight=vendor"
# above line doesn't solve problem
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=off"
# above line allows screen brightness but hyperthreading is off
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=ht"
# above line allows screen brightness adjustment at cost of power, core temp?
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_generic_hotkey"
# above line doesn't solve screen brightness problem
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=strict"
# above line does not solve screen brightness problem
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux"
# above line does not solve screen brightness problem
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=noirq"
# above line doesn't solve
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=noacpi"
# above line does not allow screen brightness adjustment
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor"
# above line does not work
# GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i915.modeset=0"
# above line make linux unbootable. Have to book off USB/CD and manually edit grub.conf

BEST WORKAROUND
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=ht"
# above line allows screen brightness adjustment at cost of power, core temp?
