I have done some further testing with the following results and a bit
more info.

1) When booting from the Karmic Live CD, I cannot recreate the problem
2) When booting Karmic in recovery mode, I cannot recreate the problem
3) The problem seems to only affect mass storage devices as I have a local printer and the mouse connected via USB
4) I cannot execute apport-collect once the system hangs
5) As I use this system for work I'm reluctant to upgrade given the number of problems reported in the forum
6) I have another system with a similar config (ie. Karmic, 64bit) that does not have this problem. I have attached two log files:
a) works.txt: this is from a working system when a mass storage device is plugged in
b) fails.txt: this is from my system that fails. One thing that's obvious is that it does not complete the scan

Please let me know if you need more info.
