This sounds pretty bizarre, but when my laptop wakes up from sleep, I can't use the keyboard buttons to adjust the screen brightness until I get connected to a wireless network. The slider in the battery monitor works fine, though. Once I'm connected to wireless, suddenly the screen brightness changes according to the keys I pressed earlier, and also, I get notifications about the power adapter being plugged in or unplugged.
It seems like the battery monitor does not process any dbus events while I'm connecting to a wireless network.
